Connection: The Bridge That Saves Us

We’re tired. Everywhere I go, the deeper conversations carry the same undertone, fatigue, despair, a sense that the world is being run by people who have forgotten wisdom, empathy, and the “little human.” It can feel hopeless.
And yet… As I leave Europe, I keep returning to the moments of delight I’ve experienced. Small, luminous moments. What do they have in common? Connection.
One of the principles behind Dear Body is simple: We protect what we fall in love with. We can only abuse what we feel disconnected from.
Years ago, in corporate London, I brought photos of vulnerable participants into leadership meetings, tiny reminders of the “why.” It was mocked at first, but the intention was clear: When we understand, our hearts open. When our hearts are open, we connect. And we protect what we feel connected to.
So what is connection? It’s not an act. It’s an arising.
The Latin root tells us: to bind, to weave together. Connection happens when the “I” quiets, when anxiety loosens, when the achieving mind gives way to the appreciative mind.
It’s curiosity. A glance. A smile. A moment of recognition.
Henrik, the restaurant owner across the road, does this effortlessly. A wink, a warm “Hvad så?” and suddenly you’re part of a neighbourhood “we.” Micro-bridges. Tiny threads of belonging.
Connection intensifies through shared experience. Laughing with an old friend in a chocolatier. Trusting a fellow bus passenger more than a stranger on the ferry, simply because you travelled together. Retreat participants meeting years later with instant warmth. Weird, and yet completely human.
Biologically, connection releases oxytocin, softening stress, increasing trust, opening generosity. Chicken or egg: the more open I am, the more connection arises.
And then there is the connection that dissolves the self entirely. The scent of a rose. Meditation. Contemplative practice. Moments where “Charlotte” disappears and only experiencing remains. No rose, no me, just oneness.
So what is connection a byproduct of?
Presence Appreciation Kindness Curiosity Shared experience
And beneath all of it: Safety Trust The softening of the separate self
Connection is the bridge that appears when two humans or a human and a rose meet without armour.
And the world needs more of it. Decision-makers cannot make selfish, thoughtless choices if they feel connected to nature, to people, to the life their decisions touch.
So in the midst of despair, let’s remember connection. Let’s become connection-ready.
With love, Charlotte
